I’m raising £5,000 to complete essential dental treatment that’s still causing pain and disruption in my daily life.

Why now

Last year, whilst volunteering in the run-up to Trans Pride Brighton, I was hit with severe toothache and needed emergency dental treatment. It was painful, exhausting, and made organising the event much harder than it should have been, honestly it was a right pain in the bum!

A friend helped me get the most urgent work done in Spain, where treatment is more affordable and where I have a dentist I trust. That stopped things getting worse but it didn’t finish the job.

Right now, I still need two extractions and five crowns. The total cost, including travel, is £5,000. Until it’s done, I’m dealing with ongoing pain, infection risk, and the knock-on effects on eating, sleeping, speaking, and working.

The bigger picture

Alongside this, I’m being honest about something I’ve put off for years:
I also need gender affirming surgery. The total cost is around £50,000.

That’s an enormous amount of money to ask a community for, and it’s taken me a long time to even say it out loud. I’ve spent most of my adult life prioritising other people, my community, my work, my responsibilities and not my own health.

I don’t regret that. But I can’t keep paying for it with my body.

What changed

The friend who helped me with emergency dental treatment didn’t just relieve pain — they changed how I think about myself.

They encouraged me to put the same energy I’ve always put into supporting my community into supporting myself. That meant asking for help and doing what I can.

I realised that if I made about £10 per book, I’d need to sell 5,000 books to fund surgery. I’ve sold about the same amount of children’s books in the past through a publisher and I was reminded that self-publishing means I can direct that work toward my own healthcare.

So alongside this crowdfunder, I’m writing and self-publishing the Jackie Trolling book series. Every penny I make from those books will go straight into this same total.
